Let's Fish for Coins: Christian Fundraising

Let’s Fish for Coins!

Do You Feel Like God Has Called You to Do Something?

Maybe you feel prompted to go on a mission trip, start a nonprofit, or help an organization you care about. You yearn to do this important work, but your need for money holds you back.

This blog is not for the professional fundraiser, the development officer. In fact, if your group or organization has anyone working in a fundraising capacity, I am not writing to you. I am writing to the person with a God-given passion to do something, but with no idea how to pay for it. And I have great news for you – I believe that if God is truly asking you to do a task, the money is already waiting for you.

Encouragement from the Bible

The title of this blog comes from Matthew 17:24-27. The collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him if Jesus paid this tax. Basically, they were telling Peter that he and Jesus owed money, money that Peter didn’t have. Peter probably felt stressed and afraid.

Peter went to Jesus to ask what to do. While Jesus first pointed out he didn’t have to pay the tax, he said he would because they didn’t want to offend the tax collectors. Dealing with unnecessarily angry people would have been a distraction from the work they were doing. He directed Peter to go fishing, and he said a large silver coin would be in the mouth of the first fish he caught.

The Bible doesn’t say where the coin came from, but it was likely from another person. Someone might have lost it or threw it into the lake. At the right time, God redirected it for His purposes – to provide money for Peter and Jesus to pay the Temple tax so they wouldn’t be sidetracked from Jesus’s primary purpose on earth, to save humanity.

Like the coin in the fish’s mouth, God has the money waiting to finance what he has called you to do. Haggai 2:8 says, “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies” (NLT).

The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

– Haggai 2:8 (NLT)

Ultimately, all money belongs to God, and he can and will redirect it for His purposes.

How I Want to Help

I want to encourage you on your God-given mission and give ideas about how to find the money you need. And I will not be speaking to you as an expert. I have some experience in fundraising, but I definitely don’t know everything. I plan to interview people like you who had to raise money for a Christian cause, and I will tell their stories. We will be inspired by their passion, and we will learn what worked for them and what didn’t. Along the way, we will witness God showing up in some surprising ways.

Will you join me? Together, let’s fish for coins.
